TWINNING PROGRAMME

[April 19th to 28th 2007]

A group of 20 students of the present class 7 and three teachers Ms. Suchitra Suresh, Ms. Bhagyalakshmi E.K andMs. Vamshee Priya Amar participated in the twinning programme to Rosyth School, Singapore.

P5 Adventure Camp – Theme ‘Reaching new peaks together’.  The camp was conducted at SABIBUN SCOUT CAMP, amidst nature.

Children were divided into various groups.  Each group participated in a set of activities, as per the camp guide on a particular day,  under the guidance of efficient trainers. However, there were simpler, equally interesting activities as well.  This enabled children to do what they could, according to their level of comfort. Activities conducted were rock- climbing, touch rugby, low elements, command and conquer, river challenge, rafting, kayaking, orienteering, outdoor cooking. The VNS children attended various classes in English, Computers (IT), Mathematics, Science, Dance, Music etc. with their buddies.  It was truly an enjoyable learning experience.

The VNS students were taken to various places – city tour covering the major landmarks of Singapore (National museum, supreme court, city hall, Victoria theatre, civilian war memorial, tour on river cruise, musical fountain, Jurong bird park, night safari with tram ride, tour of little India – China town, Heritage centre, Kampung glam, Orchard road, National science centre).

As part of Twinning programme, we had Rosyth School, Singapore visiting VNS [18th June – 26th June 2007]

VNS welcomed a group of five teachers, Vice-Principals – Ms. Sabariah, Ms. Norlela, Ms. Jau Hsia Chien, Ms. Saira and Ms. Siti Ramlah accompanied by twenty children from Rosyth School of Singapore in the month of June.  Students observed English, Science, History and Mathematic lessons of class 5. In addition they were challenged to explore different fields like yoga, games, art, music etc. They explored the VNS cookery lab and under the guidance of Ms. Girija, ventured to make their own salad. They were taken for a Bangalore Darshan (Tippu’s fort, Iskon, Chitrakalaparishad, Lalbagh, Vidhanasoudha, Cubbon Park.  Vishweshwarya Museum), Planetarium, Eco-Village and  Mysore Palace.

The Staff and students of Rosyth School were particularly impressed with the nutritious food that was served. The students were given a task of completing tie-dye work on ‘T’-shirts supplied by VNS, which was done under the guidance of Ms. Suchitra Suresh and Mr. Mallesh.  The home stay of students with their buddies was the highlight of the entire programme. Rosyth teachers on the other hand met the heads of various departments and exchanged their views on the their specific subjects. The ten day visit of the Rosythians was concluded with a cultural programme organized by both the schools. Events included a welcome dance by Aishwarya S Padmanabhan of Std VII and Lakshmi Ashok of Std X followed by a folk dance (depicting Indian, Malay and Chinese culture) performed by Rosyth children.

Ms. Elena Lengthron of Nunnery Woods High School , Worcester, England  visited our school.  She is a Science Teacher in the school but also works for a Teacher’s TV Channel [www.teachers.tv] in the U.K.     She was making a short documentary on successful Global School Partnerships and wanted to interview all teachers and students involved in the exchange programme with our partner school, the John Bentley School in Wiltshire , U.K. A similar school in Kenya , Africa is being interviewed and both will be broadcast in October 2006 as part of International Links in Education.  When visiting the school she spent some time with the students of Std IX who had been discussing diversity at the global level, national level and had then come down to the diversity in the classroom which is a unique feature of Cosmopolitan Bangalore.  The students themselves were surprised at the diversity in costumes and cuisine that was displayed.

Ms. Claire Wurtzel, the Director of Faculty Development, New York visited VNS on 7th November 2006 and much appreciated the learning outcome during the ISA exhibition.   Claire Wurtzel runs a Training Centre ‘All Kinds of Minds’ which strives to educate the educators about different kinds of mind.  Aspiring teachers are unprepared to deal with the immense challenges posed by the different minds in a classroom and the schools attuned program which she monitors, provides the training whereby teachers can serve as student advisors and academic coaches to work on student's weak links.  Children need to have that assurity that there is atleast one adult beyond the family who cares how they function, how they feel and where they are headed.  We have requested her to conduct a workshop and do hope she will oblige.
