Co-curricular activities are an integral
part of school life at Vidya Niketan. Students are encouraged to
participate in various activities like sports, cultural and literary
activities. Inter-house competitions held weekly help nurture and
develop the talents and interests of all students. The activities
are diverse - salad making, flower arrangement, cartooning, collage
making, debating, dance, drama etc.
Students participate in various cultural and literary programmes
held in the city. This fosters a spirit of friendly competition
and helps in the all-round development of the child. This builds
confidence in them when they leave school.
Yoga
Yoga helps children develop better self-awareness, self-control,
flexibility and co-ordination. They carry these skills beyond class
and into their daily routines. Children are fresh and unhampered
by the dictates of society. Their approach to life is unique. Yoga
encourages their creativity to flow, destroy fear and anger, and
abandon sadness. Their trust in the inner self improves and their
minds and hearts will be accordant.
The full potential of children is untapped. When given the right
environment, they excel beyond expectations. Yoga helps the hyperactive
and attention-deficit child. These children crave movement and sensory
/ motor stimulus. Yoga helps channelise these impulses in a positive
way. It helps instil calmness, confidence and balance.
The active yoga exercises are followed by a deep relaxation on their
backs, arms and legs that are stretched but relaxed. This brings
their minds and bodies in sync to achieve awareness of inner space.
This is the basis of yoga and meditation. In addition, this is the
basis for a happy and peaceful life.
Meditation
Ten minutes of meditation is practised after assembly at VNS. This
has a positive effect on the child’s physical health. This
improves self-respect and self-worthiness.
Meditation is the best way to stay cool, calm and focused. Meditation
helps relax the mind and overcome weaknesses. It generates the power
to respond more effectively to people and situations. This increases
the ability to concentrate and focus one’s energy.
Concentration of the mind enhances creativity and effective problem
solving. It increases the ability to reflect and deepen personal
learning.
Counselling
Children form the more vulnerable segment of human society, and
often succumb to the pressures of daily life.
Challenges like competitiveness, academic difficulties, exam anxieties,
peer pressure, bullying, friendships, family crisis, sibling rivalry,
habits and other similar issues can have a lasting effect on a child’s
mental, physical, emotional, social and spiritual well being. The
situation is often aggravated by ill-informed (though well-intentioned)
advice and criticism from adults.
Counselling in VNS forms a very important part of the support mechanism.
This is required to understand and help deal with difficulties that
afflict children. The counsellor tries to provide a supportive,
facilitative, friendly, caring and nurturing environment that enables
children to gradually reform. In addition, we also provide support
to parents regarding child-rearing matters.
Counselling is a collective effort that involves children, parents,
teachers, school management and the counsellors, to ensure a happy
childhood for our children.
Physical Fitness
VNS has introduced compulsory games where students choose to play
any of the following games: football, cricket, basketball, volleyball
and throw ball. Trained coaches monitor the students and coach skilled
students for inter-house and inter-school matches.
